Thanks to all the Lions fans who submitted questions for this edition of the Lions Roar Q & A. LMU Athletic Director Craig Pintens was kind enough to answers questions for the week.
The NCAA D1 Council recently allowed football and basketball to have voluntary, on-campus athletics activities starting June 1, 2020. What effect does this have on LMU, and is LMU still subject to local and state regulations that call for reopening activities later than June 1, 2020?
LMU continues to align decisions with guidance from public health officials, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the CA Department of Public Health, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. LMU has established a great website that contains the latest information on COVID-19
Has LMU Men’s basketball schedule been affected by travel, finances, or opponents not being in session in the Fall semester?
At this point, it has not affected the schedule.
Will LMU Men’s Basketball participate in a preseason tournament this year?
As of now, we are scheduled to play in the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase.
Are you in favor of transfers not having to sit out a year?
In Division I, there is a one-time transfer exception in all sports with the exception of football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and men’s ice hockey. There has been legislation to enact this rule in all sports. I generally agree with this proposal, but do have concerns on the effect to graduation rates and the academic progress rate. There was a very interesting article written recently by Dana O’Neil in the Athletic, that I encourage people to read.
What are your expectations for coaches and teams success with respect to LMU graduation rates and the Academic Progress Rate?
We have four pillars in our athletic department: Recruit, Teach, Win and Graduate. We want our coaches to continue to graduate our students at one of the highest rates in the country. We have a 94% graduation success rate, which is the 2nd highest in the state of California.
