The impressive surge by Loyola Marymount’s spring sports helped power the university to finish 2nd overall in the West Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup, closing to finish right behind six-time champion BYU, and well ahead of 3rd-place finisher Gonzaga. St. Mary’s finished 4th.
The Commissioner’s Cup, which is awarded to the WCC institution enjoying the most success during conference play, was won for the 6th straight year by BYU. BYU, which has been in the conference for seven years, has dominated the conference since the school joined the WCC. USD has won five Commissioner Cups, Pepperdine has won three, while LMU and Santa Clara have won one championship each.
It’s an impressive finish for the Lions and a nice topper to retiring Athletic Director Bill Husak’s career and his emphasis on all sports.
