Updated 12-30-13 Marquetti committed to USC today. LMU’s recruitment of Marquetti might have changed with the possibility of the Lions being out of scholarships.
Malik Marquetti has burst onto the basketball scene in a big way in the past few weeks, making a name for himself at the Pac Shores tournament this past week at Redondo Union high school. Marquetti’s superb play during the tournament where he averaged approximately 24 ppg, took him from diamond-in-the-rough status to big time prospect within the span of a few days.
Marquetti is a terrific athlete with a high motor who can score in bunches. He is very effective at scoring around the basket, using his ability to quickly jump in succession several times as well the excellent vertical he achieves. He is also excellent at slashing to the basket and is a nifty passer who handles the ball well. Marquetti excels in transition in an up tempo offense, so I was not surprised that I saw the LMU coaching staff at several of Marquetti’s games during the event. Josh Gershon from Scout.com tweeted that three coaches from the Lions staff watched Marquetti during his game against Compton.
Gershon also reported that the LMU was the very first to offer Marquetti a scholarship. News of Marquetti’s play has certainly traveled fast and several other schools have started to monitor him. There is one scholarship left in the 2014 Lion class and its pretty certain Marquetti will be a top priority.
Future Lion Kyron Cartwright is already handing out assists as a true point guard encouraging Malik to join the Lion family.
Stay tuned as we continue to follow the recruitment of Malik.
